County tables most items July 12
CENTERVILLE - Leon County Commissioners Court met for its first regular July session on Monday, July 12.

All members of the court were present. A motion to approve the minutes of previous meetings and to pay the bills was approved.

Five of the agenda items were tabled to allow the court time to obtain more data on the requests. However, a funding request to update computer information in District Clerk Diane Oden Davis' office was approved. This update has mandated by the state.

Leon County 1988 Subdivision Regulations were amended to include cul-de-sacs. The court also approved the sale of two struck-off properties in Hilltop Lakes, one for $750, the other for $2,000. These amounts had earlier been approved by the Normangee ISD board of trustees.

There was a lengthy discussion concerning a recent loss of power to county buildings, which resulted in a brief loss of power to the emergency telephone system. Precinct 4 Commissioner Dean Player was asked to look for a solution for this problem.

County Auditor Susan Pugh requested and received approval to make budget line item transfers totaling $70,775.68.

• June 30 - Commissioners Court met for its second regular June session on Wednesday, June 30.

All members of the court were present. After opening ceremonies, the court was turned over to a group of Leon County 4-H members, who were introduced by County Extension Agent Tommy Neyland. He said the group had won a state traveling trophy, and their names were the first on the trophy. Neyland said the group intends "to keep the trophy in Leon County forever."

The 4-H group then took the court members' seats and conducted a faux meeting, demonstrating to the court how it should be done. They were given a round of applause by those present.

Once reseated, Commissioners Court passed motions to approve minutes of previous meetings and pay the bills.

The court heard an announcement that the old rural Lone Star ISD has requested it be moved from Oakwood ISD to Buffalo ISD.

Martha Jones from District Attorney Whitney Smith's office received approval to renew the Victim Information Notification Everyday contract. This program is funded by the state.

A motion was passed to obtain two plaques recognizing Foster Lewis Thompson for his efforts in obtaining grant funding for construction of the Leon County District Court Building. One of the plaques would be given to Thompson, and the other displayed in the courthouse.

Karen Stott addressed the court regarding the Keep Leon County Beautiful and Adopt A Road programs. Afterwards, the court approved her request to fund the purchase of signs or a flag.

The court voted to submit a Notification of Withdrawal of Request for Public Assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This has to do with assistance set aside for Hurricane Ike several years ago.

A contract with the Brazos Valley Council of Governments to provide indigent health care was approved, as was a contract with the Bedias Creek Soil and Water Conservation Service. The court also approved an additional $90 funeral cost expense and a $40 grave marker for Larry Tillery.

The court approved the payment of $3,000 to Country Cousins for food for the Veterans Appreciation Day in May. Though funneled through the county for bookkeeping purposes, the amount was actually paid for by donations made for this event.

The Court approved acceptance of a $500 donation to Sheriff Jerry Wakefield's office from Anadarko Petroleum Co. The Leon County Sheriff's Department also received used computer equipment items, which were given to the department by BVCOG.

Pugh received approval to make budget line item transfers totaling $53,987.85. Also, Pct. 3 Commissioner Mark Ivey was given approval to purchase a used roller packer for $56,000.
