| Verna (Voigt) Covington |
| Verna (Voigt) Covington Funeral services for Verna (Voigt) Covington, 87, of Madisonville were conducted Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at Madisonville Funeral Home in Madisonville. Bro. Dean Ferguson, pastor of First Baptist Church of Centerville, officiated. Burial followed in the Ten Mile Cemetery near Normangee.
Covington was born Sept. 14, 1922, in Minco, Okla., the youngest of six children born to Mary Boevers and Albert Voigt, and died Saturday, July 24, 2010, after a long struggle with diabetes and heart problems. She lived in Union City until her senior year of high school, when her family moved to Manor. Covington graduated from Manor High School in 1941. She was employed at the Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi, and was certified as a riveter, helping to keep planes in the air. Fearing war, the military was training many young women to repair planes, as the work area was often very small, and the military needed small bodies to crawl around in them. Covington met Charles Wm. "Billy" Covington of Normangee at the boarding house where she lived, and they were married on Nov. 11, 1949. He built the couple's first house in the Rolling Acres area of Corpus Christi. The garage was finished first, and they lived in it while he continued building the home, which was completed in 1953. Her husband was later transfered to Atlantic Richfield in Pasadena, and while there, Covington worked for Gulf Coast Investments in Houston. Upon her husband's retirement, the couple moved to Madisonville. They joined Union Baptist Church in the Ten Mile Community. Covington was employed in the bookkeeping department at Farmers State Bank, and also at Madisonville State Bank. Her husband died on Dec. 13, 1983, but Covington continued to work at the bank, retiring in 1989. During the last years, when she faced many medical challenges, Covington relied on three women she fondly called "her little girls" - Theresa Bledsoe, Evelyn Dawson and Anne Clancy - to assist her with all areas of life. She loved her family and friends, and showed her love by baking for all occasions, especially when family or friends were ill, and was known for her pies and candy.
She was preceded in death by parents Mary Boevers and Albert Voigt; husband Charles Wm. "Billy" Covington; two brothers, Earl Voigt and Joe Voigt; and two infant twin sisters, Vandora Virginia Voigt and Nina Voigt.
Survivors include brother Sam F. Voigt and wife Nicki of La Salle, Mich.; two sisters-in-law, Sue C. Kundig and May H. Covington, both of Huntsville; and a host of nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Ten Mile Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 216, Normangee, Texas, 77871.
Madisonville Funeral Home of Madisonville was in charge of arrangements.
